Family Files Wrongful Death Lawsuit Against Jacksonville Sheriff’s Officer

Tampa, FL – March 19, 2025 – The family of Djuan Octavious Jackson, who died on October 28, 2024, after being shot by a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) officer, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the officer, J.C. Rose. The lawsuit alleges excessive force and a violation of Jackson’s Fourth Amendment rights.

According to the complaint filed in the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida, Jackson was involved in an altercation with an unknown male when Officer Rose arrived at the scene. Instead of using non-lethal means to de-escalate the situation, the lawsuit alleges Officer Rose immediately drew his service weapon and fired multiple shots into Jackson’s torso, resulting in his death. The complaint further states that even after it was clear Jackson was deceased, Officer Rose proceeded to handcuff the body.

The lawsuit alleges that Officer Rose’s actions constituted excessive and unreasonable force, especially considering Jackson was not armed with a lethal weapon (only a butter knife). Additionally, the complaint highlights that Jackson had a history of mental health issues, a fact that should have informed Officer Rose’s approach. The lawsuit contends that Officer Rose’s actions were objectively unreasonable and violated Jackson’s Fourth Amendment rights, resulting in his wrongful death.

The family of Djuan Octavious Jackson is seeking compensatory and punitive damages, as well as attorney fees and costs. They are represented by Black Rock Trial Lawyers with Gil Sanchez, Esq., as the lawyer representing the Plaintiff.
